In October of 2019, seventeen courageous high school girls gathered in the rotunda of our State Capitol and presented speeches addressing the challenges of keeping our republic strong. How timely that would prove to be!
The idea of an oratorical competition was originally conceived as a project by the Metro Republican Women. The project became “Speaking Proudly”, a non-partisan, non-profit group of highly motivated volunteers.
Speaking Proudly has announced its second biennial oratory competition. It is open to girls in grades nine through 12 who reside or attend school in Minnesota. On Saturday, October 23 2021, this same speech competition will bring together a new group of high school girls to speak on the theme, A More Perfect Union, Rising to the Challenge.
The contest encourages girls to develop their own opinions and present them clearly and convincingly. It is an example of free speech and it couldn’t be more important in today’s climate. Taking place in the impressive State Capitol, the prizes for the best speeches will exceed $1,500, $1,000 and $500.
I heard amazing things about this non-partisan & non-profit event two years ago, and I decided to get involved myself. I’m hoping to convince you to do the same! The more money we raise, the more that we can award to our top prize winners.
Hosting this incredible event doesn’t come without some expense. Vikki Bleise (pictured at left), our former SD49GOP Vice Chair Nancy Carlson, and I hosted a special fundraiser this past Thursday evening. Vikki introduced us to Meaghan McManus (pictured at right), the impressive young woman who won the first Speaking Proudly oratorical contest in 2019.
I’m appealing to you to also consider making a contribution. Any amount would be greatly appreciated, and allows us to cover expenses, as well as offer the three winners additional funds this year that they can put towards their continuing education. You can donate via the website.
You can also help by encouraging any Minnesota high school girl you know — interested in speech — to consider submitting an application to compete. These young women will not only have the experience of an amazing day at the State Capitol, giving their speech in front of a variety of judges, but they’ll meet like-minded girls and make new acquaintances. There’s prize money for three lucky finalists, but every girl wins by participating and developing life-long skills of self expression.
You can find more information about the competition at the Speaking Proudly website CLICK HERE. Applications should be received or postmarked on or before September 11, 2021. The Speaking Proudly Steering Committee will review all speech descriptions submitted and select competitors and alternates. The Steering Committee will not see application forms or other identifying information about a competitor. Invitations to compete will be sent out no later than September 20.
So, please, spread the word and support this important endeavor for the girls today who will become the leaders of tomorrow!
