Minnesota has implemented a number of initiatives to improve the life of its poor and disadvantaged citizens.  Local and state government agencies, churches, and private foundations all have put forth ideas for improvements.  Some are proposing that we should unionize those that serve them.  Is that the answer?

In 2014, Minnesota home-care workers voted to join the Service Employees International Union. As the Star Tribune reported, “It was the culmination of one of the most sweeping union expansion efforts in state history and represented a victory for Dayton and the then-DFL-controlled Legislature.”

However, in February this year, Minnesota child-care providers voted against unionization by a wide margin (1,014 against, 392 for).   The Star Tribune wrote, “If the vote to unionize had succeeded, child care providers that receive state money to care for children under the Child Care Assistance Program would have joined AFSCME, a major public employee union and a strong backer of DFL candidates and causes.” 

Jennifer Parrish, a child-care provider and leader of the Coalition of Union Free providers, pointed out that AFSCME has backed universal preschool, a move that is contrary to the interests of self-employed providers like her, because it would put many of them out of business.

Eliot Seide, executive director of AFSCME Council 5, set the terms of the debate should supporters of unionization resume their push after 2017.  “AFSCME honors the mighty women who care for Minnesota’s poorest children. … We thank Democratic leaders who affirmed the child-care providers’ right to vote for a union.”
